Background

We've all seen the devastating effects plastic has on the ocean. But according to Mary Creagh from the House Of Commons Environmental Committee 'Recycling rates are flatlining' and the Independent points out that 'Most people still do not care about buying plastic', so this obviously isn't doing enough. Strategically, the challenge was to show the direct effect it has on people, not wildlife, in order for them to take notice and reduce their plastic consumption.

Idea

The idea was to show people the direct effect plastic can have on them, by messing with something they hold very dear; The national dish. Battered plastic was served up, not fish, to unsuspecting members of the general public, to highlight the fact that in 2050, there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

Results

- In just 48 hours it reached over 18 million people.

- Visits to plasticoceans.uk up 2000% - More than half of people survey said they'd reduce their plastic consumption, after watching the film
