Background
On November 8th 2013, the Philippines were struck by Typhoon Haiyan, killing 4,500 people, destroying one million houses, leaving 4.4 million people homeless and affecting 13 million in total. A beautiful place was turned into a ruin. To overcome this nightmare, the Belgian 12-12 Consortium launched Haiyan 21-21, a joint operation between five major charities.
Caritas, Unicef, Handicap International, Oxfam and Doctors of the World all needed help in reconstructing the disaster area.
Idea
To make giving money less abstract and easier as well as more tangible, haiyan2121.be allowed people to see what their gift could mean to a specific area.
With a simple click and drag action, donors could select an area to rebuild. The larger the area they chose, the greater the donation needed to be.
People could map their own contribution to the rebuilding effort. And together they were able to turn things around.

Our Thoughts
This happens to be the last of the submissions I am reviewing and, it seems, one of the best. I think there are no fewer than three campaigns in this issue of Directory created in response to Haiyan and each has been innovative in its own way. But this is a beaut.
The fact that five major charities were prepared to join forces, rather than compete for funds, would have helped donors believe that their money was going to be put to good use. The satellite mapping idea, showing the ‘before’ and ‘after’ with a simple click, drag and rebuild interactivity is brilliant. What they have created here is a donation mechanism which is new but which will be ready to action immediately the next time it’s needed.
